I was getting aggressive before, and you were a total stranger. You seem a lot younger than I thought you were too...
[ A Halfling, maybe? She thinks before she can stop herself. His pointed ears are cloaked by the oculars so she can't see them, but his short stature and grumpy personality reminds her a little of Chilchuck. ]
...The soap won't crumble if you hold it, by the way. It might be a little soft, but you can pocket it. The burlap should keep it contained.
[ HIS EYES? Marcille is suddenly SO concerned, blinking her eyes and lifting a hand, that she almost gets jumpscared by the bird landing on her. She's only a little startled, leaning to her side to look at the strange and friendly little bird.
She looks back at Hunter again, still concerned but offering him a worried smile. ]
You're welcome. Aw, I didn't mean to make you cry... [ She glances back at Flapjack. ] Is this your familiar?
[ This has to be a familiar, right? It hangs around this boy specifically, and there's something in its chirp that suggests affection or understanding. It's clearly intelligent. ]
You didn't! [ if his voice just cracked a tad there, was definitely her imagination. definitely he clears his throat. there's no evidence of tears on his face at this point ]
[ flapjack just settles nicely on her shoulder, chirping in a friendly fashion. the bird clearly hadn't meant to startle her ]
No, I'm not...
[ he catches himself on whatever he was going to say, but ]
It's my palisman. His name is Flapjack. I didn't summon him. He... chose me.
[ SHE KNOWS THE TRUTH. Flapjack gets a little smile! She reaches up a curled finger near its head. If Flapjack lets her, she'll give its head little strokes and scritches with the tip of her finger. ]
What's a "palisman?" How does it choose people? [ Then, to Flapjack: ] You are such a cutie!
[ flapjack will absolutely let her, and makes some happy bird noises as he is lavished with attention. hell yeah, marcille, keep it coming ]
[ he gives her an almost smug expression, as well, for a bird, when called a cutie ]
It's... a creature carved from palistrom wood. They're basically... magic, and they can turn into a staff, and let the user use some magic, too. They're made from wild magic. Not that much different from a familiar, I guess.
[ hunter perks up a little bit, clearly enjoying talking about this topic. he also nods in agreement to flapjack being called a cutie. ] Usually a witch carves their own from the palistrom wood and gets a friend for life. But... some of them don't have witches to partner with anymore, so... if they find someone they like, they bond. Flapjack was alone for a long time, but he found me, and... decided to stick with me.
[ SOOOO CUTE. She beams! She's not normally one to indulge someone if their head is getting big, but she has a soft spot for birds in particular, and this one is friendly and has a lot of personality. ]
"Witch?" [ She looks back at Hunter and sets her hand on her hip, the other still holding up her staff. ] That sounds like something a mage would do in our world, although I've never heard of carving a familiar before before, but we do make our own mage's staff.
[ She turns her staff a little, smiling wider. ]
Ambrosia took seven years for me to weave. I'd be devastated if we were separated.
There's a reason why it takes years to make one of these. It's a really important instrument for Elvish magic.
[ She's proud, ofc. She presses a finger to her chin and looks away. ]
Now that I think about it, the Elves from the Western continent have fairy familiars that can transform into their staffs and weapons too. They're more like tools than little friends, though.
[ She nods towards Flapjack. ]
So maybe it's more like that. Anyway, you're a magic user then, right?
You must be skilled, to have made it yourself. [ hunter is fascinated!! examining ambrosia with unfiltered and nerdy interest. he doesn't touch it, but he does lean in closer for a better look. so cool.... ]
It seems like every world has something along those lines.... [ but the small grin fades from his face, and he shakes his head. not so keen on this subject ] Not on my own. I can only use Flapjack's.
[ flapjack warbles a bit as if adding something to the conversation ]
This boy doesn't hide his emotions well. Marcille lowers her staff and slows her roll on the topic. ]
Um... Sure. [ She points off towards the town. ] Actually, are you busy? I was just about to go and look for a market that still sells fruit. Do you want to come?
[ sorry marcille..... he still looks very interested in ambrosia and learning more, but.... a brief look of surprise flashes across his face when she invites him ]
[ It's so they can keep talking! Something about this boy has Chilchuck's prickly exterior and warm, sincere interior. After seeing those tears, she's fully endeared. ]
Great. [ She starts walking them along! ] Do you like fruit? Maybe sweets?
[ And it's so she can find out what he likes foodwise. Nothing wrong with knowing your friend's snack preferences. She'll happily introduce him and Flapjack to bananas. ]
[ unlike chilchuck, hunter is actually a teenager ]
Uh.... I guess?
[ following after her, not really thinking about it. he mostly just ate what food was in front of him, and frankly the boiling isles cuisine is mostly food that even dungeon meshi characters would find unpalatable... ]

[ trying to figure out how to process this ]
Apology? For what?

Aggressive? What are you talking about?
[ apparently, he did not find it at all aggressive. he looks down at the soap he's holding so carefully, looking a little emotional ]
[ then scrubs at his eyes. you saw nothing, marcille! quietly: ]
... Thank you.
[ flapjack settles on marcille's shoulder, chirping at her. friendship!! ]

From what I understand of other worlds.... a lot of people can do their own version of magic. Mage, witch. Not much different.
[ but he is admiring ambrosia ]
You weaved this yourself? It's... intricate. [ he sounds impressed! ]

You can "only use his magic?" That's not the same thing as using magic yourself?
[ Marcille lifts her staff a little. ]
Ambrosia is like a conduit for my magic, and it holds magic power within it too. It works differently for you?
no subject
I can't use magic myself. Most people where I come from can.
[ this is not much of an explanation, but.... ]
Flapjack is magic. So by letting me use him, I can use his. Anyway, tell me more about Ambrosia.
